What the houses are like
Zero-lot-line houses sit close enough that a hedge touches two roofs, and a hedge is a nest, a bridge and a nursery at the same time. Add a screened patio, a slab that has settled a little, and forty years of paint over the expansion joint, and ants have a dozen ways in that do not involve a door. The houses are mostly block and mostly sound; the trouble is the eighteen inches between them.
How the year runs here
Ghost ants and bigheaded ants are the constant, worst just after rain when the ground floods them out and they come up the slab. Roaches follow the same joints in the heat of August. Rats show up in the hedges more than the attics here, which is a difference worth knowing before somebody sets traps in the wrong place for a month.
