What the houses are like
Low single-story roofs, wide overhangs and soffit vents that have been painted over and re-cut more than once. That soffit return is the way in for roof rats, and it is also where a wasp nest turns up in July. Inside, many of these houses still have the original kitchen cabinetry against an exterior wall, which is a warm dry void with a food source, and roaches know it.
How the year runs here
Rodent season is the loud one, November through February, when the first cool nights send them looking for somewhere warm and the somewhere is your ceiling. Roaches run all summer. Termites are here too, mostly subterranean rather than drywood, because the slabs are old and the soil contact is easy to find once you know where the additions were joined on.
